Recently I bought a three stop glass ND square filter by Lee. So I decided to do a few test shots to see how neutral it is and how it behaves in combination with gradient filters. I have 4 stop Hitech ND and some gradients also made by Hitech. Before I bought them I searched the net for some info about the color cast they have but I did not find concrete ones, so I hope this one will be helpful.
Here’s the test:
This is the control shot without filters. The white balance is with gray card. The same white balance was applied to all shots excluding the once that are with corrected color cast. I made the tests in my room so there may be some color variances reflected from the environment but they are insignificant. The light comes from a window.
This is the shot with the Hitech neutral density filter. As you see there is a strong pink cast.
A shot with the Lee ND filter. This one do not cast any color to the image.
And another shot with the Hitech gradient filter. Maybe there is a little cast in the dark. Anyway I have never noticed it in field images.
And two shots with ND and Gradient filters together.
Definitely pink!
Lee ND filter and Hitech gradient filters definitely is better combination.
The shot above is with Hitech ND and the white balance is corrected. Pink is fully corrected. (better use a gray card)
And this one is the fixed image made with Hitech ND and GND. The same white balance as the upper image was applied. Where the dark area of the GND overlaps the ND the pink remains. Sometimes this is not that bad.
For example in this image the real sky colors were much more gray and colorless.
